Combined defense time
Without a submission, the lower combined defense time wins after all rounds. A time limit counts at its full duration.
How EBI overtime works · 2026 update
- Each attacker chooses back control or spider web. Both athletes attack once per round, for up to three rounds.
- One attacking submission wins after both turns. If both submit, the faster finish wins. The second attacker’s clock is capped at the first submission time.
- With no submissions, compare combined defense times after the configured rounds; lower wins.
- Under the updated escape criteria, keep timing through mount, side control, and three-quarter mount. The defender must recover guard or reach top position with their neck and arm safe. Freeing the arm in spider web alone is insufficient.
- A defender caught in a front headlock is still live. A defender who secures a front headlock or submits the attacker has escaped; record Escape.
- Leg entanglements are excluded from overtime, except truck attacks.
The referee calls escapes and submissions. Event formats can vary; use your organizer’s round and time limits.
